Hannah Sorila

I am a Global Studies Graduate with a French Minor and a concentration in Community, Culture, and Care from Providence College, class of 2017. Most recently you could find me in Tacloban City in the Philippines interning with GoAbroad. Now, I am living the Vermont life and proudly representing SIT Study Abroad.

This site is where you can find my experience in International Education, as well as my work as a Global Studies major, a French minor, a world traveler, an active learner, and a global citizen.

Hannah is an outstanding candidate for (the field of international education). Her passion for international education is contagious, and her collaborative leadership skills are unmatched.

As a student leader in the Global Studies Department, she consistently demonstrates her capacity to build relationships with students and faculty, her dedication to facilitating education abroad experiences that are deeply meaningful, and the creativity she brings to all of her work — from organizing on-campus events that catalyze dialogue around campus diversity, to expanding the Global Studies Department's notion of what a senior digital portfolio can accomplish.

Hannah's thoughtful approach would benefit any team. Throughout the year-long Global Studies Capstone course, her reflections on traveling abroad and collaborating with her peers on projects pushed me to think critically, to stay informed, and to push the boundaries of what I think possible. Hannah has also modeled creative facilitation methodologies that I will apply to my own work.

In short, Hannah is the complete package of skills and passions needed to thrive in the field of international education. She demonstrates equally keen instincts for navigating the philosophical and ethical questions of education abroad with maturity and grace, and for executing at a high level in essential program areas like marketing, communication, and event planning. She would bring all of that and more to her work (in the field)!

- Bridget Landry: Part-time Faculty of Global Studies, Providence College; Student Engagement Strategist, Talloires Network; M.A. International Education, SIT Graduate Institute
Over the past decade, we’ve graduated several hundred students in our Global Studies major at Providence College, an ideal preparation for the kinds of global citizens who would thrive (in international education).  Hannah is brilliant and hard-working. She is a learner and a visionary. Creative and organized.  And her energy is contagious.

In Global Studies, all of our students are required to study abroad, and Hannah has played a significant leadership role in helping us integrate international education into our curriculum.  Drawing upon her own experiences during her year abroad and significant study of global engagement, Hannah has helped prepare younger majors for their time abroad by co-teaching a 1-credit Global Engagement course, and has facilitated sessions for students returning from study abroad in upper level courses.

She has also helped me grow in my teaching as a global educator, challenging me to think more critically and responsibly about what it means to be an engaged educator.  I know she can do this for many other faculty and students with a position (in the field).  She will put all of her effort into this work, and make this a transformative experience, not only for herself, but also those she encounters.  This is what she has done for Global Studies over the past four years, and if you give her this chance, she will do it for (you too).  I strongly recommend that you hire this remarkable idealist who gets things done.

- Nicholas Longo: Professor, Global Studies + Chair; Public and Community Service Studies at Providence College
Of the many students I have worked with in the past eight years, I have not met anyone as passionate about international education as Hannah. The interesting thing about Hannah, though, is that this passion does not manifest itself in blanket enthusiasm for travel and sightseeing, but rather in continuing to think about how study abroad can be done ethically, how to make study abroad inclusive, and to consider her privilege and positionality. She does all of this with a maturity and composure that is not often seen in students her age.

- Grace Cleary: Assistant Dean of International Studies at Providence College
The Global Studies program at Providence College is committed to support faculty-student partnerships as well as peer mentorship opportunities that foster reciprocal learning and shared leadership. I had the opportunity to partner with Hannah during her senior year, co-developing departmental initiatives connected to international education, and co-facilitating the Global Engagement seminar that supports students in pre-immersion dialogue and reflection. Hannah’s educational vision and her sensitivity to perspectives and life experiences different from her own proved exceptionally valuable to the mentorship she offered to students in the seminar. She engaged learners in thinking critically about difference and power relations as they prepare to enter communities worldwide, and supported them in navigating the anxieties and challenges associated with departing one’s familiar context and embracing new life narratives.

Hannah’s commitment to international education  is remarkable. Her leadership in global studies inspired many Providence College students to develop a deeper cultural appreciation and to truly value the importance of being multicultural and plurilingual in today’s world. The role that she played at Providence College as global studies ambassador had a great impact in the lives of many individuals, including myself. I learned inestimable lessons from Hannah about integrity and creativity in leadership, mindfulness in social and professional relationships and endless curiosity for learning. It is with extreme confident that I recommend that you hire this honest leader, a brilliant mind who will lead humbly and passionately in whatever project with which she is entrusted.

-Nuria Alonso García: Chairperson, Global Studies; Director, Master of Education in Urban Teaching,  Providence College; Visiting Scholar, Institute of Humanities, St-Petersburg State Polytechnical University, Russia
Hannah displays an incredible amount of dedication and passion towards the international education field which is not only displayed in the copious amount of work experiences she has done but is also shown through her knowledge of the industry.
